UV Bracelets
Instructions:
  • Take the UV beads that are on a pipe cleaner and place them under sunlight

  • Look at what happens to the beads under sunlight

  • Cover the beads with your hands for a minute

  • Look at what happens to the beads

Supplies:
  • UV Beads

  • Scissors

  • Pipe Cleaner

What's Happening?
  • Ultraviolet rays interact with the photochromic dye in the beads that changes the color of the beads. The ultraviolet light is given off by the sun so when the beads interact with the rays it allows them to change color in the sun.

  • A chemical reaction takes place when the rays interact with the beads. The rays break down a bond in the molecule, photochromic, that allows the color change.

  • The colors we see and ultraviolet ray are on the electromagnetic spectrum which is a range of all types of electromagnetic radiation which have different wavelengths which gives them different functions.

    • Gamma, X-Ray, UV, Visible, Infrared, Microwave, Radio

Why do we care?
  1. UV rays can be dangerous to us

  2. It can damage our genetic material, DNA, in our skin cells, smallest unit of life.

  3. We can help protect ourselves from the damage by using sunscreen that has SPF

  4. Provides a protective layer on top of your skin to let the UV rays bounce off your skin and not damage it.

  5. Other rays from the electromagnetic spectrum

  6. Microwaves in microwaves

  7. Radio waves in the radio

  8. X ray imaging with x-rays

  9. Chemical reactions happen all around us!

  10. Cooking

  11. Rust

  12. Digestion
