  • In this activity we see that the energy from the black light is absorbed by the tonic water which then gives off visible light that we can see as colors.

  • Light is being absorbed and reflected by the molecule, Quinine, in tonic water. UVB radiation, given off by the black light, is absorbed and reflected into visible light.

    • UVB Radiation is one of the types of UV rays and it has a higher frequency than UVA.

      • Frequency is the number of times a wave passes through in a given time period.

  • There are some laws when talking about thermodynamics, the physics behind heat and temperature. Energy, which is the ability to do work is discussed in that it cannot be created or destroyed. Energy can only be transferred, changed from one form to another.

  • The light waves the come from the black light can be found on the electromagnetic spectrum which is a range of all types of electromagnetic radiation and each kind of radiation has different wavelength

    • Gamma, X-Ray, Ultraviolet, Visible, Infrared, Microwave, Radio

Why do we care?

  1. Energy is everywhere!

    1. When you flip on a light in a room it completes the circuit to allow for the electrical energy to power the light.

    2. Lights also give off another kind of energy, heat! If a lightbulb is left on for a long time, it can get really hot, so be careful.

  2. With each different wavelength it has a different function

    1. Gamma: doctors use it to see inside your body

    2. X-Ray: dentist, airport for bags

      1. X-Ray films?

    3. Visible: stars, lightbulbs

    4. Infrared: emitted off our skin or any object with heat

    5. Microwave: found in microwaves, can cook food, watts
